- 1 cup softened butter
- 1 cup apple butter

Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease an 8×8-inch square baking dish with butter.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside one cup of this mixture for topping the squares. Add the chopped dates and apple butter to the remaining mixture and mix until combined.
Press the date and apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, and sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the top. Bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Allow to cool before slicing into squares.
