Repairing Plastic Bumper Scratches

Step 1: Fill the Scratch
The first step to repairing your plastic bumper scratch is to fill it. Try using plastic epoxy or a special plastic bumper filler, available at many auto supply stores. Clean the area of the scratch thoroughly before you begin. Use the end of a cotton swab to spread the filler across the scratch, pushing it into the crevices until it’s slightly raised above the level of the surrounding bumper.
Step 2: Sand the Filler
After the filler material has had time to dry, use sandpaper to sand it down to the level of the bumper. Start with a medium grit sandpaper and move to a finer grit. Take care that you don’t sand down past the edges of the scratch or you’ll have to start again.
Step 3: Smoothen the Surface
Once the surface area is even, use rubbing compound to get the scratches out and make the plastic smooth. Rub the compound onto the repaired area in circular motions until the area is consistently smooth, then use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess.
Step 4: Clean the Area
Use a mild detergent and a clean cloth to wipe down the area again, removing any residue. Then use either a wax or a protective spray sealant to prevent further damage. Choose a sealant that’s specifically designed for use on plastic, so that it won’t cause a reaction.
